Riverside Walter Reed Hospital Projects
Master Plan
James River Architects provided master planning for the hospital, which included
a new patient wing, ICU, admitting area, physical therapy suite and medical arts
building, expansion to recovery areas and potential locations for additional
parking and circulation. We also provided an analysis of departmental square
footages for the entire facility, fire area separation and existing egress
conditions. Completed 2009
Fire Wall Survey
JRA surveyed the hospital's existing fire walls and produced survey notebooks and
electronic files with floor plans indicating areas of non-compliance, extensive
photographs and notes which the hospital staff has been using to complete repairs
and bring the fire walls into compliance. Subsequently, JRA was asked to perform
an analysis of fire wall requirements for the hospital per current building codes.
Completed 2009
Pre-Op Suite and Main Corridor
Renovation of existing rooms into a pre-op suite with 4 patient beds, nurses’
station, supply storage and toilet facilities. Concurrently, we provided designs
for renovating the hospital’s main corridor, including new floor and wall finishes,
doors, ceiling treatments and light fixtures. Completed 2010
Emergency Department Finishes
Provided new finishes selections for the entire emergency department including
new wall paint and base, wall and door protection, handrails, bumper guards and
corner guards. Completed 2010
Physical Therapy Department
Two suites in a building adjacent to the main hospital were renovated for use as
a new physical therapy suite. Our design includes a comfortable waiting/check-in
area with an adjacent admin and work area for technicians. Surrounding the main
gymnasium space are 8 general treatment rooms, a cardiac rehab room, a speech
therapy room, a nutrition office, the director’s office, a conference room
capable of seating 12 or more persons comfortably and a large occupational therapy
area. Completed 2010
Patient Room Renovations
James River Architects was tasked with the renovation of 38 patient rooms, 22 of
which were double-occupancy. Our design included new finishes throughout, a
redesigned headwall, built-in wardrobe units and upgraded bathroom facilities.
Warm wood panels with aluminum reveals house the required headwall hookups and
equipment while giving the room a richer, non-institutional feel. Corner-mounted
solid-surface lavatories are enhanced by floor-to-ceiling mosaic tile with
built-in shelves, and bathrooms have been made more inviting through the use of
porcelain tile. Ongoing
