Riverside Tappahannock Hospital Projects
Master Plan
James River Architects worked with Tappahannock hospital administration to develop the Departmental
Allocation Plan shown at the right, using it as a springboard for the creation of the
Master Plan and the prioritizing of future projects. Completed 2009
Fire Wall Survey
We used over 150 photographs and days of field work to produce survey notebooks
and electronic files with floor plans indicating areas of non-compliance, accompanied
by photographs and notes which the hospital staff has been using to bring the fire
walls into compliance with current codes. Completed 2010
Mammography Suite
When Medical Records moved to a new location, the vacated space became available
for a new mammography suite. Through careful planning we were able to provide the
hospital with a new mammography room with adjacent workroom, a connecting office,
waiting, dressing and toilet rooms. The waiting area takes advantage of existing
windows to bring natural light into the space. Completed 2010
Pharmacy
Vacant space across the hall from the existing pharmacy provided the opportunity
to upgrade the facilities and revitalize the working environment without
interrupting pharmaceutical services for the hospital. The new design brings
Riverside Tappahannock Hospital’s pharmacy into compliance with USP 797,
and incorporates Chemo Compounding and I.V. Compounding rooms with an anteroom
separating them from the general pharmacy area. Completed 2011
Patient Room Renovations
One of the challenges facing Riverside Tappahannock Hospital is that of renovating
existing patient rooms and identifying locations that could be converted into
additional patient rooms. To better convey our vision for the design of these
rooms, we constructed a prototype model and used it to develop renderings of our
design. Two colors of wood-grain vinyl plank flooring delineate the patient and
visitor areas of the room. Built into the space are a charting station, wardrobe,
lavatory with mosaic tile and wood-paneled headwall. The attached bathroom features
porcelain tile throughout for a more pleasant patient experience. Ongoing
