Brittingham - Midtown Community Center
From the portfolio of R. Anderson Moberg, AIA
Mr. Moberg worked closely with officials of the City of Newport News to design
this central municipal recreational, activities and gathering center for the
citizens of Newport News. The single-story masonry structure contains a number
of small and large multi-purpose spaces which reflect the diverse activities the
building supports. The main feature of the center is the natatorium containing
Hampton Roads' only indoor 50-meter 10-lane competitive swimming pool. In
addition to a movable bulkhead to permit segmentation of the pool, the natatorium
has an electronic timing system, a 3-meter diving board and two 1-meter boards.
There is fixed seating for 500 spectators. Construction of the natatorium is an
aluminum box-beam rigid frame with a Kalwall insulated translucent exposed ceiling.
