Bayport Credit Union

One of our first commissions after founding James River Architects was to develop a new design for Newport News Shipbuilding Employees' Credit Union that would serve as a prototype for their growing presence in Hampton Roads. Beginning work before we had even moved into our offices, we built exterior and interior models of our design which were enthusiastically approved by the Credit Union building committee. Now known as Bayport Credit Union, three local branches feature this design, including this branch located in the Hidenwood area of Newport News. The two-story tall entrance element makes a dramatic statement on Warwick Boulevard and gives the credit union a sense of identity. A greeter's desk welcomes members as they enter and are directed to the main teller area or to one of several glass-front offices on either side.
